Description of Services

Hospital Homebound is a service provided for students K-12 and designed to assist students who are absent from school due to medical reasons. In order to minimize educational disruption, students are connected with the Homebound Teacher who will help facilitate learning between the school and student. The goal is to have students work on similar assignments that they would be doing if they were attending school.

Eligibility

Any student experiencing significant absences from school due to medical reasons is eligible for Hospital Homebound. Hospital Homebound is a temporary educational service, that provides academic support only. This program is not designed to provide mental health support. Duration of service depends on information provided and unique characteristics of the medical situation, and priority will be given to students completing graduation requirements.

Services

Hospital Homebound services are provided for up to 3 months, depending on the needs of the student. The maximum time per day is 2 hours to a maximum of 3 days per week. When a student is unable to attend school for more than 3 months, continuity of learning options including participation via Teams, accessing supports through the school at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and online learning through Kootenay Discover School.

Curriculum

While on the Hospital Homebound Program, the student remains registered at the home school and the student’s program is still the responsibility of the home school. The Hospital Homebound teacher acts as a liaison between the home and the school for academic support. Academic tasks and programming will be provided by the student’s home school.

Accessing Hospital Homebound Services

A student who expects to be away for three weeks or longer can be referred to Hospital Homebound Services. Referrals are made by a student’s home school principal. Reaching out to your child’s school principal regarding your child’s extended medical absence from school is the first step.
